URBANA — Philip Sidney Stinard was born Feb. 25, 1958, to Dr. Charles and Mrs. Virginia Stinard, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He passed away Tuesday (March 26, 2019).

Phil graduated from high school in Glenwood, Iowa, and with honors from Iowa State University. He worked in the field of corn genetics research at Iowa State with Dr. Donald Robertson in 1982 and in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Schnable in 1991. In 1993, Phil joined the USDA Maize Genetics Cooperation-Stock Center in Champaign and continued his research on mutant corn. He made his own contributions by discovering and characterizing new corn mutants. He was a member of New Covenant Fellowship church in Champaign.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger; and beloved partner, Walter L. Fields.

He is survived by his brothers, Chad (Marisol), Tom (Julie) and Jim (Kathy); sister, Ginia (Craig); five nieces; six nephews; and many co-workers and friends

 A memorial service was held March 30.
